A four-storey outpatient pavilion built over an occupied surgical wing, delivered without closing a single operating room.
Mercy Health needed forty more exam rooms and an imaging suite, on a site with nowhere to put them except directly against the surgical wing that had to keep operating.
Building against a live hospital
The structural connection ran along a corridor used for patient transport. We sequenced steel erection into night windows agreed a fortnight ahead with the clinical team, and every penetration through the existing envelope was made under negative-pressure containment.
The scheduling constraint drove the structure. A conventional cast-in-place frame would have meant months of formwork against an occupied wall, so the pavilion is structural steel with composite deck, which let us close the frame in eleven weeks and get the site quiet again.
